ORIGINAL OR EXPLAINED

Real chapters. Real paragraphs. Then you choose how to hear them.

ListenDock keeps the paper's actual chapters and paragraphs. For each paragraph, you decide: listen to the original text, or listen to an explanation of that same paragraph.

CLEAN AUDIO

It removes text that should not be spoken.

Page numbers, running headers, arXiv links, and scan junk are stripped before the voice starts. You hear the paper, not the PDF chrome.

EQUATIONS

Explained mode says the math in words.

Instead of hearing symbols like x*3 + y*4, Explained mode says what the equation means, for example a linear combination of the variables. Original mode stays closer to the symbols. Explained mode teaches the same equation in language you can follow while listening.

SINCE 2024

We introduced simplified text as PDFTOMP3.

ListenDock started as PDFTOMP3 in 2024: To make the text easier to understand in the car, we simplified formulas and mathematical notation. You can still listen to the original text. The simplified text is ideal to listen to scientific papers while driving. Equations are spoken as language instead of symbols.

MADE FOR PAPERS

Listen to a research paper without reading its page layout.

A paper is not a blog post. Paragraphs cross page breaks, headings mark the argument, and the PDF is full of page numbers, running headers, and arXiv links that should not be spoken. ListenDock prepares that structure before it makes the audio.

Keeps the paper in a useful order

ListenDock rebuilds the visible section and paragraph order, joins paragraphs that continue on the next page, and does not treat each page break as a new section. It aims for audio sections of about 150 to 400 words, so you can move through the paper by idea instead of by page.

Cleans text that should not be spoken

Before speech starts, ListenDock removes page numbers and small items such as arXiv links. It also cleans broken formatting, odd symbols, and text mistakes left by scanning. Original mode keeps the source wording, but sends the voice only text that a narrator would read aloud.

Explained keeps the same structure

Explained mode does not shrink the paper into a recap. It keeps the same chapters and the same paragraphs as the original, and explains each paragraph so it is easier to follow. You still move through the paper in order. Later findings stay in later sections.

Original, explained, or two speakers

Use Original when wording, figures, and claims must stay close to the paper. Use Explained when you want the same structure taught in clearer words. Premium Explained audio can use two speakers: an expert host and a guest who asks the questions a listener is likely to have. You can ask live questions while you listen, then download the MP3.

Hear it on a real paper first

ListenDock already turned Ilya Sutskever's deep learning reading list into chapter audio, including Attention Is All You Need. Ilya's 30 papers as audio

COMMON QUESTIONS

Research paper audio questions

Can I listen to a research paper or an arXiv PDF?

Yes. Upload the PDF or paste an arXiv or journal URL. ListenDock extracts the text, rebuilds sections, and turns each part into audio you can play or download as an MP3.

Is Explained mode a short recap?

No. Original mode reads the paper. Explained mode keeps the same chapters and paragraphs, and explains each paragraph in easier words. It is not a short recap of the whole document.

What happens to citations, page numbers, and arXiv links?

ListenDock removes page numbers and small items such as arXiv links, then cleans odd symbols and broken formatting before making speech. Original mode still follows the source order.

Can it handle math and two-column PDFs?

ListenDock rebuilds the visible reading order, including two-column layouts, and aims for spoken sections by idea. Dense math is turned into listener-friendly wording in Explained mode. Original mode stays closer to the source.

Does Explained mode spoil the results section?

No. Explained mode follows the same chapters and paragraphs as the paper, so later findings stay where they are in the original.

Is listening free?

Text-to-speech playback is free. Preparing a document or using a premium voice may use credits. No credit card is required to start.

Can I download an MP3?

Yes. Listen online, continue in the iPhone or Android app, or download the audio as an MP3.

Can I listen in another language than the paper?

Yes. Choose the audio language you want. ListenDock translates the content before making the speech when needed.
